DNV Releases NAUTConnect Class Symbol to Improve Navigation System Performance and Safety

2022-10-19

Recently, DNV launched the NAUTConnect service. As an additional voluntary class symbol developed in cooperation with the industry, NAUTConnect relies on DNV's Verity digital platform to achieve the best performance and safety of the navigation system.

NAUTConnect is a continuous remote verification system for electronic navigation system and integrated network equipment. It covers the procedures of on-board system and data acquisition infrastructure, shore-based system and data standardization, and system health monitoring and compliance verification. This voluntary classification symbol includes IMO and classification society requirements, as well as requirements for service providers, such as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) involved in the monitoring and maintenance of designated systems and equipment. It enables shipowners and managers to better track the update and replacement of hardware and software.

Geir Dugstad, DNV maritime technical director, said: "With the development of the era of ship interconnection and the deep integration of systems, we need to focus on increasing coordination and creating processes and services that help improve the safety and efficiency of electronic navigation We cooperated with excellent partners such as Haida Luther on NAUTConnect and received excellent feedback and enthusiasm for the new service. With further development, we will continue to cooperate with system and data collection suppliers, continue to expand our continuous, automated and data-driven solutions, and consider covering other functions, such as communication and control systems beyond navigation. "

The main contributors of the industry in this cooperation include the navigation system manufacturer Konsberg Maritime (KM) and its digital subsidiary Konsberg Digital (KDI), and the Norwegian Heidelberg cruise ship is one of several ship owners that pilot the new service.

Gudbrand Str ø mmen, the chief engineer of KM, said: "For KM, NAUTConnect provides us with an opportunity to provide key system data with quality assurance to end users and business stakeholders, as well as better system status and performance insight for shore-based users. This also provides us with the power to achieve the standardization of key system parameter reports. By using NAUTConnect as an industry standard, we can better obtain the system provided by our sub-suppliers " KM provides access to key system data, such as topology information, health status and related alerts.

Kim Evanger, vice president of KDI, added: "We have signed a digital cooperation memorandum of understanding with DNV since 2019. We have long regarded NAUTConnect as an excellent opportunity for cooperation and development, added value to both sides, and helped enrich the content and services of our Kognifai ecosystem." KDI provided data through their Vessel Insight infrastructure.

Gerry Larson-Fedde, General Manager of Hurtigruten Coastal, said: "We have really seen the value of continuous, automated and data-driven services, which can help us better understand the operation. We very much welcome the launch of NAUTConnect service, and it is a natural choice to implement this service in our fleet. We use many navigation system suppliers in the whole fleet of Hurtigruten, and look forward to DNV expanding the development of this service to more manufacturers, so that I can We can run the system on all ships, not just those equipped with KM bridge system. We believe in this and hope to see its realization on all our ships! " NAUTConnect has been tested and evaluated on the Hydaloud Aurora.

NAUTConnect is based on the ongoing "e-navigation" strategy of the International Maritime Organization, which aims to coordinate the exchange of ship-shore information.

In particular, in order to support the development process of decarbonization and digitalization in the shipping industry of customers in Greater China, DNV set up a maritime intelligence center in Greater China in 2021 to coordinate and cooperate with DNV's relevant global business departments and technical experts, and is committed to jointly promote the development of industry digitalization and decarbonization transformation with Chinese customers.

NAUTConnect is the latest digital symbol and service launched by DNV. Based on the ship-shore data communication infrastructure, it presents the trusted status of the navigation system in a digital way in real time to achieve continuous compliance inspection and status insight, and helps all parties improve the safety and efficiency of the navigation system.

DNV China Maritime Intelligence Center gathers global and local experts to track the latest progress/achievements of digitalization, deeply participate in and coordinate the promotion of the application of new technologies, and jointly and support the industry to explore relevant cutting-edge technologies.
