SpaceX Launches Satellite Internet Service for Star Chain Ships

2022-07-10

It is reported that Musk's SpaceX officially launched the new mobile service Starlink Maritime, which provides Starlink satellite Internet services for global ships. SpaceX said that Starlink Maritime can be used for commercial ships, offshore drilling platforms and yachts.

"When you connect at sea, it's like being in the office or at home," wrote Starlink Maritime.

Just like the land, the hardware of the marine version covers a small area and does not use too much deck space. In terms of security, Starlink Maritime has point-to-point encryption technology, which can ensure the data security and privacy of users. It also comes with a mounting base that is easy to install. What's more, users can find the best installation location anywhere on the ship by downloading Starlink App.

According to SpaceX, the official price of the marine satellite terminal is $10000, including two high-power antennas. The monthly charge is $5000. After opening the service, users can enjoy a download speed of up to 350Mbps, and the installed antenna can still maintain stable network transmission in case of bad weather.

For this reason, Musk also explained on Twitter that the price was not very expensive. In the past, the network communication of SpaceX spacecraft needed to pay 15000 dollars per month, which was much slower than Starlink Maritime.

However, this price is much higher than the average personal Starlink network service. SpaceX's personal network service charges $110 per month, but it also costs $599 to purchase necessary hardware facilities. Before that, SpaceX also launched an online service for RV owners, charging $135 a month, which is much cheaper than yachts.

Previously, it was reported that SpaceX also cooperated with Royal Caribbean, the world's largest cruise operator, in providing Internet services for cruise ships. John Maya, vice president of Royal Caribbean Group, said that, "We are working closely with SpaceX to evaluate the star chain technology on cruise ships. The increase of marine ship operations has greater demand for satellite Internet, but the challenges of network supply have led to negative experience of guests on board, and the network bandwidth limit has delayed our expected business progress. Therefore, it is a good choice for Royal Caribbean to cooperate with SpaceX's star chain project."
